A Review of the JVC HM200 HD Camcorder

I wanted an HD camcorder because our standard definition one died, that is to say, it quit recording pictures and only did sound. We needed one that did good indoor video because that’s where 90% of our videos would be taken. Since we have a huge HD television and another one on the way, plus a great computer for editing video (imac with imovie 09) I figured it was time for a true HD camcorder.

I spent several days and many long hours researching my best options. Since I live in the middle of nowhere I had no way to test in a store which options were best for me. I narrowed it down to two choices and bought the cheapest one hoping it would be good enough.

The JVC Everio HM200 is a great little HD camcorder, especially if you want to record outdoor video. It has a 20x zoom, digital image stabilization and holds two SDHC cards. It’s very small, comfortable, has a genius design for a wrist/hand strap and wraps up into a neat little package. It doesn’t come with an HDMI cable so you’ll need to buy that separately if you want to hook it to an HD TV. The biggest downfall was that the indoor video was marginal. It was sort of ok if you were watching it on a computer screen, but the minute you watched the video on an HDTV you could see unmanageable amounts of noise, digitizing almost and basically so bad you have to apologize to everyone in the room for the bad picture. Not what I wanted to see.

However, there are people who don’t care about indoor video. To them I say, buy this great little number, it’s got a lot of great features, has a very intuitive menu and I really enjoyed having it.

I recommend watching some sample videos on YouTube.com and Vimeo.com if you are unable to find a store that sells one in your area.

I recently bought the JVC Everio GZ-MG330 after doing a lot of research. Even though I am not a professional photographer but I am very fond of clicking pictures and shooting home videos. I believe in capturing all the special moments of my life be it my graduation ceremony or my brothers wedding. But since I am always on the go I wanted something which is compact and easily portable. My search came to an end after discovering the JVC Everio GZ-MG330 camcorder. It’s the perfect camcorder for me as it is so small and has a body which is so light that you will not get exhausted even if you are shooting for a long time. The hard disk of this camcorder is the lightest in the world.

But don’t just get carried away by its size, the camcorder is equipped with “Konica Minolta Lens” ensuring crystal clear and bright pictures. Camcorders Gigabred engine ensures reduction of sound and noise ratio such as blocking the unwanted noises. The recording feature of this camcorder is just great and can last up to approximately 37 hours. Now that is simply amazing. I shot the entire wedding of my brother with this camcorder. I even chose different modes of picture quality for different occasions. The camcorder also has the 35 x optical zoom feature allowing magnificent optical zoom quality making it easy to record in concerts and game fields.

Camcorders micro SD card helps in storing videos and photographs making sure that all your memories are safe and sound. The in-built HDD makes sharing an easy task. There are many other special features of this camcorder such as the “auto LCD which automatically controls the brightness in the outdoor or indoor environment. The camcorder has an easy power on and off feature, the moment the LCD is opened the camcorder automatically turns on and in order to save the battery power all you need to do is to shut the LCD. The camcorder is easy to operate and is equipped with a quick restart which makes sure that you do not miss any special moment. Even during the night it captures spectacular pictures as it is equipped with an automatic illumni feature. The JVC Everio GZ-MG330 camcorder is a complete value for money and I highly recommend this camcorder to all.

JVC GY-HD200U “The Smaller Professional HD Camcorder”

The JVC GY-HD200U and the 250U are shoulder style camcorders that looks just like big professional broadcast cameras, only a bit smaller, which makes them the perfect solution to record Electronic News Gathering (ENG) or reality shows and look like you are on a massive budget!

I first used the JVC GY-HD200U when working on a reality show in 2008 and I was amazed when I saw the footage on my HDTV set, the picture was flawless with rich colors and a very good depth of field for a HDV camcorder. Because the camcorder is so long with most of the weight in the back and front being distributed across it makes for a very comfortable shooting experience, so its a very well thought-out design.

The JVC HD200U/250U Builds on the success of the previous JVC GY-HD110U and adds a super encoder capable of 1080i 60P output. Both camcorders records HDV in 1280 x 720 (720P) and comes with a big 16x Fujinon Lens, and a high-res 16:9 LCD viewfinder. The 1/3-inch bayonet mount makes this camcorder capable of adding other third party lenses from Fujinon, Canon etc.

The JVC GY-HD200U is practically the same camcorder as the JVC GY-HD250U, but the latter can be transformed into a studio camera when you add a KA-HD250 Studio Kit. The 250U also adds genlock capabilities, time code sync, and HD-SDI output. Both camcorders can record in both NTSC or PAL formats at various interlaced and progressive frame rates which makes this camera very compatible for all sorts of productions and also for traveling.

The JVC GY-HD250U and 200U records high-definition video on regular MiniDV cassettes, but with the optional DR-HD100U Direct-to-Edit recorder, a hard disk workflow can be achieved, while simultaneously creating back-up material on digital tape.

The JVC GY-HD200U is great professional camcorder and one of my favorites. Because of its ergonomic design and interchangeable lens capacity it has become very popular in reality tv productions, documentaries and lower budget ENG news crews.
